At Poochy Pets, everything we do is rooted in gentle, loving care.
When we look after pets, we prioritise kindness, patience, and understanding. We respect their boundaries, move at their pace, and recognise them as sentient beings with their own needs and personalities.
And sometimes, that same mindset can extend a little further into our everyday choices too.
Some people rescue, foster, or do TNR. Some donate or volunteer. Some choose to eat more plant based.
None of us are doing it perfectly. But many of us are trying, and imperfect effort for animals still makes a big difference.
Why this matters
In South Africa, a large portion of animal products still come from intensive farming systems, where animals are often kept in confined conditions with limited ability to express natural behaviours, and where their welfare is not prioritised or humane.
At the same time, many rescues and shelters are overwhelmed, with animals being abandoned, neglected, or in need of care.
For many animal lovers, there can be a quiet disconnect between the deep care we have for pets, and the reality of how animals are treated elsewhere.
And that awareness can be a powerful place to start making more thoughtful choices.
Small changes that make a difference
There are so many simple, meaningful ways to support animal wellbeing in everyday life:
Volunteer or donate to local rescue organisations (Even small contributions help provide food, medical care, and safe shelter.)
Share posts to raise awareness (This can change animals entire lives.)
Support sterilisation efforts (Sterilising pets and supporting TNR programmes helps reduce overpopulation and suffering.)
Choose ethically sourced meat and dairy where possible (Supporting farms that prioritise space, natural behaviour, and humane treatment.)
Support local and regenerative farms (These farms focus on sustainability, soil health, and more respectful animal care.)
Incorporate more plant based meals and substitutes (Even one or two meals a week can have a positive impact.)
Choose cruelty free products (Many beauty, cleaning, and household products are available without animal testing.)
Stay curious (Asking where products come from helps create more transparency and accountability.)
Local rescues to support 🐾
If you’d like to make a direct difference, supporting local rescues is one of the most impactful ways to help animals in need:
SAFE (Save Animals From Euthanasia): Rescue, rehoming, and sterilisation https://www.safe.org.za/
A Kintsugi Project: Rescue, rehabilitation, and second chances https://www.akintsugiproject.org/
SPCA (KwaZulu-Natal branches): Animal protection, rescue, and education https://nspca.co.za/

Simple ways to help
Adopt or foster
Donate funds, food, or supplies
Sponsor sterilisations
Volunteer your time
Share adoptable pets and rescue posts
Local and ethical food options to explore
If you’re based in Ballito or surrounding areas, here are a few more conscious options to look into:
Farmer Angus A regenerative farm focused on pasture raised livestock and ethical practices https://www.farmerangus.co.za/
Déjà Moo Micro Dairy A small scale, pasture based dairy focused on low impact, more natural farming https://deja-moo.co.za/
Faithful to Nature Cruelty free, plant based, and ethically sourced products https://www.faithful-to-nature.co.za/
Local Ballito and Salt Rock markets Many smaller vendors source from local farms with more transparent practices.. it’s always worth asking and exploring.
A note on everyday shopping
If you’re shopping at larger retailers like Woolworths, there are still ways to make more conscious choices.
Woolworths has made strong commitments in certain ranges, particularly around free range and higher welfare standards in their meat, dairy, and egg products.
When shopping, you can look out for:
Free range certification
Welfare approved or higher welfare standards
Grass fed or pasture raised indicators
Cruelty free logos on beauty and household products
Choosing products with clearer welfare standards helps support better practices over time. (Also, there are SO many meat and dairy free substitutes that taste amazing)
A gentle reminder 🐾
Small, thoughtful choices really do add up.
Whether it’s supporting rescues, what you eat, where you shop, or the products you choose.. each decision is a way of showing care.
